The challenge: climate neutrality with carbon footprinting

As a leading retailer of outdoor gear, apparel, and experiences, evo is committed to building a community where adventurous spirits can be ignited for years to come. To achieve this vision requires not only protecting communities and ecosystems, but also reducing GHG emissions across their operations, actions, and investments.

Since 2021, evo has been reporting on their annual GHG emissions as part of their membership with organizations like Climate Action Corp. But to achieve their goal of climate neutrality, they realized that they needed a more comprehensive analysis of their Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. evo selected Carbon Direct to develop their 2022 carbon footprint because of our scientifically-proven approach and shared values.

“The first step to meaningful emissions reduction is meaningful measurement,” says Jamie Whalen, Senior Manager of Community Impact at evo. “Measuring the emissions of a retail company like evo is a unique challenge. From product inventory to packaging to store locations, we needed to look at everything we do and distill that data into actionable emissions insights. We found that in Carbon Direct.”

The solution: distilling data into actionable emissions insights

This carbon footprint is for demonstrative purposes and reflects a sample range of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions for a mid-sized retailer. It is not specific to evo and does not represent their 2022 footprint.

Carbon Direct worked with evo to analyze data across a number of sources, including: spending, utility invoices, travel receipts, shipping data, and employee commuting. From this analysis, Carbon Direct identified key opportunities for emissions reduction across facilities, products, and shipping. Carbon Direct also worked with evo to create a repeatable process for consistent tracking and annual reporting.

“What’s important to us is that we understand where the bulk of our emissions are coming from and why,” says Jim Knutsen, Chief Culture and Strategy Officer at evo. “Now, we can prioritize emissions reductions based on what’s realistic, measurable, and in alignment with our organizational goals.”

    What’s next: prioritizing emissions reductions

To achieve climate neutrality, evo will start reducing emissions by using lower-emitting materials in manufactured products and throughout their supply chain. They also plan to work with their vendors to help drive science-aligned climate action in the retail industry.

“As a business focused on getting outside, we are uniquely vulnerable to climate change,” says Jamie. “We can do our part to keep snow in the mountains and protect our natural spaces, by working hand-in-hand with our vendors to develop consistent reporting frameworks while also improving our own operations.”
