Microsoft raises the bar for high-quality carbon removal
Microsoft and Carbon Direct have been committed to the development of effective carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions since the release of the first Criteria for High-Quality Carbon Dioxide Removal in 2021. Together we are working to address the quality challenges in the voluntary carbon market and drive effective climate action by developing a set of science-based benchmarks that can be used by the broader CDR community.
The 2024 edition of the Criteria incorporates both the latest science and equity considerations in a constantly evolving field. This document advances the common definitions for high-quality CDR solutions outlined in our essential principles, and introduces new criteria for emerging carbon removal methods like enhanced rock weathering (ERW). It also expands on the principles of environmental justice for meaningful community engagement and a just transition to a low-carbon future.

Boulder County develops carbon removal strategies for local governments
After climate change-related weather patterns ignited the most destructive wildfire in Colorado’s history, Boulder County decided to take action by creating the Climate Innovation Fund.
With this initiative, Boulder County sought to mobilize local government resources to advance climate adaptation strategies for increased resilience, as well as model how local governments can incorporate carbon removal projects into their sustainability plans.
In collaboration with Carbon Direct and the 4 Corners Carbon Coalition, Boulder County has documented best practices for place-based carbon removal in a comprehensive playbook. The four-part framework outlines how local governments can implement high-quality, equitable carbon removal projects that take into account community resources and priorities.
