Louisa Brotherson, PhD

Hybrid Decarbonization Scientist

Carbon Markets + Biochar + Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) + Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)

Dr. Louisa is a Hybrid Decarbonization Scientist at Carbon Direct. She supports due diligence, deep diligence, and project oversight of hybrid carbon management projects.

Before joining Carbon Direct, Dr. Louisa Brotherson worked as a Carbon Ratings Scientist at BeZero Carbon, a carbon credit rating agency. There, she focused on evaluating engineered carbon dioxide removal projects and led the team’s first pre-issuance reviews. Louisa is experienced in assessing the quality of projects across the VCM, spanning industrial and hybrid (biomass-based) projects in both the reduction and removals space. She also supported the development of analytical tools to rate first-of-a-kind projects. Prior to this, Louisa spent time working in policy, contributing to reports and government consultations.

Louisa’s academic background is in rock deformation and seismology. She holds a PhD degree in Geophysics from the University of Liverpool. Her research focussed on understanding earthquake mechanics through laboratory frictional sliding experiments to reduce the uncertainty in the source properties of small-scale seismicity.
